You Are Here: Light, Color and Sound Experience
Where: North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh
When: Ongoing until July 22
You Are Here is a wild experiment by 15 contemporary artists. The temporary exhibit features works made of all sorts of materials and mediums creating some stunning and extraordinary visuals and experiences.
Strawberry Day and Dessert Contest
Where: Raleigh State Farmers Market
When: Thursday, May 3, 11 am – 1 pm
Free strawberry ice cream, free recipes, free admission and all in the charming NC Farmers Market. Also, if you think you’ve got what it takes enter your concoction into the Strawberry Dessert Contest and potentially win some cold hard cash. The timing is a little random but it could be a great way to change things up on your lunch break if you work downtown or nearby.
Apex PeakFest
Where: Downtown Apex
When: Saturday, May 5, 9 am – 5 pm
Downtown Apex’s main thoroughfare, Salem Street, closes down to cars and opens up for the community. PeakFest is all about family, friends and fun. There will be all sorts of activities, musical performances, arts and crafts, vendors, etc..
Durham Greek Festival
Where: St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, Durham
When: Saturday, Sunday, May 5, 6, 11 am – 8 pm
If you’ve never tried Greek food you’re truly missing out. However, you’re in luck as this free event will feature food, wine and all sorts of Greek traditions. There will be traditional music, folk dancing, vendors, kids activities and more.
Carrboro Day
Where: Carrboro Recreation & Parks
When: Sunday, May 6, 1 – 5 pm
Come out and celebrate Carrboro! The event will feature stories, photos, poetry, live music, dancing, field games, crafts, food vendors and much more. Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket.
Light the Woods with Sound
Where: Dorothea Dix Park, Raleigh
When: The weekends of May 11-13, 18-20, 25-27, 7 – 10 pm
If you’re looking for a special experience in a special place then don’t miss this unique fusion of visual arts and music. For three weekends in a row Raleigh-based artist Nate Sheaffer will be filling Dorothea Dix Park with amazing neon coils of over 30 colors. Not only will the installations be beautiful to look at but they will also interact with music created by professional musicians and the public.
Ritmo Latino Festival Cary
Where: Town of Cary Town Hall Campus
When: Saturday, May 12, 12 – 6:30 pm
Ritmo Latino is a celebration of Cary’s Hispanic community featuring an array of music, dance, and visual arts. There will be delicious food from all over Latin America, kids activities and more!
Bimbe Cultural Arts Festival
Where: Rock Quarry Park
When: Saturday, May 19, 12 – 8 pm
In its 49th year, the Bimbe Cultural Art Festival “is a celebration of African and African American history, culture, arts, and traditions.” There will be live music by local groups, arts and crafts, delicious ethnic food, community resources and more.
Artsplosure
Where: Downtown Raleigh
When: Saturday, Sunday May 19-20
Arsplosure is THE arts festival in Raleigh. It’s the city’s long-running, yearly eruption of artistic creativity and energy, centered around Fayetteville Street. There will be free musical performances by local, national and international artists. There will be over 170 visual arts and crafts exhibits, interactive art installations, all sorts of performers and much more.
Freedom Balloon Fest
Where: Fleming Loop Park, Fuquay-Varina
When: Friday-Monday, May 25-28, Starts 2 pm on Friday and runs all day on Saturday, Sunday, and until 12 pm on Monday
This Memorial Day Weekend over 30 hot air balloons will soar over Fuquay-Varina’s Fleming Loop Park. Just after sunset all the balloons will light up for a stunning and special display. The 3-day event will feature delicious NC-based food and tons of fun activities.
